sometimes i go to sweat your prayers at waves studio. i drink endless cups of coffee at ottos. i hike through the tesc woods and meditate on the beach. But I want more- i want to know the secrets of olympia
what do you do, where do you go, what do you see
that makes olympia your own?

Re: olympia's secrets
Thu, March 2, 2006 - 11:29 PMI spent 18 years in Oly between 1984 and 2003. Ive been in scurlocks treefort, ran thorugh mud bay, climbed half the trees at TESC, passed out at meadow parties, seen 50+ full venue shows at the capitol theater, smoked herb on the roof of almost every building downtown, closed every bar twice, graffitied the steam tunnels at TESC and in the capital building, kayaked bud bay, longboarded down 4th ave at midnight, been arrested for jaywalking, stole a yatch, lived at ottos, danced all night at the northshore surfclub, reko muse, thekla, had sex in the middle of state avenue, went to the first 6 procession of the species, sqauted at the wizard toms, survived the 2001 earthquke despite being in the attic at media Island, dealt drugs to nirvana, motherlovebone and half of subpop and sst, drank coffeewith governer Booth Gardner, partied ten years of ABC house jams, played pool at marios, performed at the fourth ave, hung with negativland, had my emablmed cat 'art' censored during artwalk and got a gallery sale of $500 for it, managed the realestate of 11 business partnerships owning the rex, martin, chambers and other landmark buildings- including the best pizza shop east of new york, old school pizza (word for rich and kenny!), started two non profits, parties at the hall of the woods, graduated from TESC twice, once in a painted leather jacket...
jesus. you dont know half of those places cause they are gone, like reko muse, thekla, northshore. you cant get into the steam tunnels under the capital or TESC cause they are sealed off now. you can kayak bud bay, and run across mud bay alt low tide. grunge is over (as of 1992, in my humble opine, cause naming a thing can kill it, and selling it will), and I dont do drugs anymore.
You make the secrets. No one showed us how to get into the steam tunnels. we found them. scurlocks treefort is still there if you dont mind breaking federal laws, tresspassing and the very real possibility that you will break your neck trying to climb up the into the decomposing thing. amazing nonetheless. climbng the buildings to get to the roof is up to you. Volunteer for a local non proffit- you might like the Gifford Pinchot task force or sustainable community roundtable.
Olympia never was mine. But sometimes you get caught up in some of the magic that happens there and you end up with lifelong friends, great memories and eventually a sense that even though you cant go back, it was worth it. Something magic happens. its not about incrowds, or the right coffee, and you probably know that. alot of people in oly dont. Thats why i left. I was there so long that I became old and crusty, and i didnt feel young and exited anymore. I am in portland now, where I was born, and I do excited. Oly is bittersweet to me now. I am glad you are excited- it is wonderful in so many ways.
In Pdx have city repair, my aikido practice, oregon tilth and portland permaculture guild, great local art and street performances, dumpster diving, great costume parties, community gardens, lots of wholistic health care, the list goes on. I miss the access to wilds that oly had- get on you bike and in 30 minutes in any direction, the puget sound, stands of amazing trees, lost on a peninsula, or in a rowboat, plucking rock crabs just off the access to zittels marina. in about three beers time you can catch enough rock crab in a cage for three people to get stupid full of sweetmeat. not so bad for drunk rowabout.
If you want Oly to be yours stay grounded and get excited. there is alot happening. and maybe, just like I did in 1984, you can start at the capital theater. I hope that the heart is still beating. But you will never know the Oly I knew. Its gone. You have to make the new one.
good luck, and keep us posted. -

tree house in the evergreen woods
Thu, March 9, 2006 - 11:29 PMI saw your treehouse! Caught me by surprise last time I went for a walk through the woods (on my way to the beach for a dip).
Filling my water bottles every time I bike past the artesian well downtown (i know, i know, but i don't mind coming back!).
Biking to the Fishbowl to fill growlers with organic beer for the full moon pizza parties at Casa de Nada.
Having sweets for breakfast while sitting in the Native plants garden outside the San Francisco St. Bakery.
Organic whole wheat blueberry-pecan pancakes (with real maple syrup!) at Otto's.
Suds & Suds: Washing clothes at the Eastside, while drinking $2 microbrews.
Parking my bike in the back rows during movies at the Capitol Theatre.
Getting high on the creative buzz at the Procession Community Art Studio, and wondering each year if I will ever work on my costume prior to the day of the Procession! -

Re: olympia's secrets
Wed, March 29, 2006 - 3:08 PMHow can yall say all this stuff. Olympia's secrects are meant to be kept secret!!!
Satyr you did Olympia right! This place is crazy like that. It's unique...and everyone has their own trip. I've only been here two years...and will be back I imagine but already I've found this place to be more magical than most. Lots of lost little places...wonderful and full of character. Places like the Blue Heron Bakery and the Crystal Cove and Primeval Ink and the Procession Studio....
But yeah you definately have to make Olympia your own and make it what it is. It's chill though...Oly has a lot of niches to find and fill. I love it here...though we definately need more music coming through...places like the Eagles and the Capitol and the 4th Ave used to see awesome shows...it's been pretty quiet recently.:(
I was just wanderin...has anyone seen a jellyfish in the phopherscent algee? That stuff is sooooo cool.

Sun, May 7, 2006 - 1:36 AMtheres no date on the surfclub reunion - just a time and location.
thats classic.
I dont remember anyone on the list, I only went there three or four times. I spent alot more time at thekla in the 92-96 timeframe- surf club daze - 84-88 - me and erik and other cats all lived in centralia. we come up to the 'city'. often tagged rides to tacoma for shows at the tacoma world theatre. lots of mudhoney and girl trouble. I was around for the rekomuse- saw metaphonics there- and hell trout! fucking hell trout was CRAZY GOOD. that was 92-94, I lived around seattle then.
god I feel old.

Re: olympia's secrets
Thu, March 30, 2006 - 5:39 PMuugh, I have missed way to much! I am a late cat, but making experiences my own!
I have met several wandering souls while scooting around Oly. I have hear abundunt and fruitful prophecies while learning what it is to "spange" on 4th street.
I was introduced to the artesian well so randomly placed.
I have enjoyed small fragments of theaiustralian aboriginal culture, music, via the didgeridoo while sitting at the park.
I have enjoyed wonderful organics from the Co op which I so wonderfully stumbled upon.
I have poked delicious yummies and awesome Porter down my throat while conversing with perfect strangers at the Fish Bowl.
I stared at the grease and cobweb laden shelves at the La Voyer while enjoying an ice cold beer as my first drinking experience in Oly (this was suggested by a fellow coffee enthusiast).
I often watch my friend Daniel Landin play with his band at the Mark while the music grabs hold. I have so much more to experience, but Oly has been a most gracious host!
Hope to run into you soon!
I have only been here since October of 05....but I am slowly making my place.
